At School No. 45, the math curriculum is based on the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics in all grade levels, with the emphasis on the eight Mathematical Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
 
Our instructional focus includes higher level thinking skills and effective questioning techniques. In order to meet the needs of our students, our teachers:
      · collaborate
      · share instructional strategies and resources
      · look at and analyze data to inform instruction
      · differentiate instruction based on assessments
 
During math instruction, students are working in small groups, in pairs, independently or in a small focused group with the teacher. Students are encouraged to “think and experience math,” acquire deeper understanding of concepts, and master basic computation skills. Teachers utilize computer technology and math learning center activities to reinforce math skills. Our goal is to create functioning problem solvers.
